Professional football player Benjamin Mendy, a Frenchman, has filed a multi-million dollar claim before an employment tribunal against Manchester City.
The left-back, 29, claims that while he was being investigated for crimes, the team withheld his wages without authorization.
Mendy, who is now a player for the French team Lorient, says that following his rape and sexual assault accusations, City withheld his income in September 2021. Nonetheless, in two trials this year, he was found not guilty.
Nick De Marco, Mendy’s attorney, has stated that legal action has been taken to recover all of Mendy’s unpaid salary through the conclusion of his City contract in June 2023. The Premier League champions are accused of hiding their earnings for over two years while the court battles were raging.
When Mendy moved from Monaco to City for £52 million in 2017, he became the most expensive defender in history. He won three league titles while he was a member of City. But he made his final appearance for the team in August 2021, right before he was arrested.
Mendy was cleared of all accusations, but according to a statement from his legal team, he was not paid for 21 months until the end of his contract.
According to the statement, the Premier League team was not entitled by contract to withhold such a large salary.
Benjamin Mendy, a former Manchester City player, is suing Nick De Marco KC (as recommended by Laffer Abogados, Madrid) for multimillion-pound wage deductions that were not authorized.
“After Mr. Mendy was accused with multiple offenses, all of which he was later found not guilty of, Manchester City FC did not pay him any compensation at all until his contract expired in June 2023. An Employment Tribunal will hear the allegation,” the statement said.
As at the time this story was filed, Manchester City had not yet responded to the case.
