The Dallas Cowboys are urging the former All-Pro wide receiver to sign a contract.
The Dallas Cowboys are currently facing some issues with their lack of depth in the wide receiver position. Despite not having addressed the problem in the offseason, the club only selected Ryan Flournoy in the sixth round of the NFL Draft and cut Michael Gallup, leaving Brandin Cooks as the team’s only reliable option behind CeeDee Lamb. Cooks was not particularly impressive in the 2023 season, only adding to the issue. The Cowboys did not sign any free agent receivers, primarily due to financial constraints, which prevented the club from pursuing top-tier running backs. The team also has yet to reach long-term extensions with some of their key players, including Dak Prescott, Lamb, and Micah Parsons. While being cautious with finances is understandable, the Cowboys may need to start filling some of these gaps if they want to contend for a Super Bowl in the upcoming season. One potential low-risk, high-reward pickup is former New Orleans Saints star and one of the best wide receivers in football for some time, Michael Thomas. Injuries have limited Thomas in recent years, mainly a knee injury that caused him to play in just ten games last season, recording 39 catches for 448 yards and a single touchdown.
Thomas was highly productive in his early years, registering over 1,000 yards in each of his first four NFL seasons, peaking at 1,725 in 2019, leading the league. He also led the NFL with 149 receptions that year and earned three consecutive trips to the Pro Bowl, plus several First-Team All-Pro selections. However, an ankle injury in 2020 limited him to just seven games, and he missed all of 2021, only playing in three contests in 2022. Considering the Cowboys’ dire need for receiver help, signing Thomas could be a potential solution.
