Baltemar Brito, the head coach of Zimbabwe’s national team, is dissatisfied with his squad’s failure to defeat Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
The Super Eagles flew to Rwanda on Sunday to face Zimbabwe in their second game of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Most Super Eagles fans were disappointed when the Nigerian squad fought back from a goal down to tie 1-1 with the lowly-ranked team.
Brito’s team was able to limit the Eagles’ threat and get the confidence they needed thanks to their 26th-minute goal with only two shots in the opening 45 minutes.
The Nigerian team had to wait until the 67th minute for Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho to level.
Following the Super Eagles’ poor performance against the Zimbabweans at Huye Stadium, Zimbabwean head coach Brito stated that his squad hoped to defeat the Super Eagles.
“They (Nigeria) are good; of course, we started the game with the goal of winning.” We anticipated winning the game. “Unfortunately, we drew, but we had high hopes of winning,” Brito remarked.
“The outcome of the game is influenced by the atmosphere created by this camping trip.” We have felt excellent emotions between the technical staff and the players since day one.
“The players came to represent their country with open hearts.” They fought too hard tonight, and this excellent performance is all about them.”
Nigeria is now second in Group C, one point behind South Africa, who will play Rwanda in their second encounter on Tuesday.
Zimbabwe and Nigeria both have two points, however the Zimbabweans are now in third place on the log.
